Photo Essay

This photo makes me feel peace because when the kids are reading with an adult supervising them, they are calm and dont make a mess in the library, so is less work for me to do at the library.

The little girl looks like an angel reading, i like when kids are reading instead be in the computers for hours, sometimes the kids prefer use the computers than read books, but is good when they read because they learn new words and improve their reading skills.

This is an example when the kids prefer use the computers, but the good point of that is that those computers are special for the kids that want to play and learn at the same time. So the parents bring their kids to the library to read and use the computers.

When the kids are together without an adult supervisor, they do whatever they want and make a mess instead of do their home works. So this can be frustrating for me because after they finish making a mess, I have to clean it up and it takes me some time to put the books in their place.

Shelving books can be another frustrating thing to do in the library, because is thousands of books that  I have to put in their places after people return the books, and I have to put the books in order, because every book has their section.

Thank you letter

Dear Alicia,

With respect and admiration, I thank you so much for being such a great supervisor. I really enjoyed this internship and having the chance to work with you and my co-workers at the library. It was my first time working with professionals and you taught me many things, like how to shelve books, make games for the kids, do arts and crafts for special occasions. I really admired the way to taught me the important factors for any person who wants to become a librarian. It's very important for librarians to be patient with people and very helpful.

I am thankful to you Alicia because you were very patient with me.  It was hard to be on time because  the Dekalb library was far from my school but you were understanding when I was sometimes late. Getting to the library put me in a good mood because I liked to work there with you and my co-workers. This experience was precious for me and made me be a better person by helping my community.  I gained new skills like being more social and expressive about what I feel.

I really appreciate that MIP gave to me this opportunity because I was able to meet really nice people like you and all the co-workers.  I will miss you guys.

Sincerely,

Merly Suclupe

  • What is the primary mission or purpose of the organization you work for?
The primary mission or purpose of the organization that I work for is to maintain the kids doing good things in their free time, help people finding books or helping with their homework and school stuff. The public libraries help any kind of people, doesn't matter the age, that's why this organization is for. And some consequences if this organization were not exist, people will go crazy finding places to get help and the kids wont learn something helpful.
  • How has your internship been similar to your expectations? How has it been different than your expectations?
My internship has been similar to my expectations in many ways, before I came to my internship site, I thought this was full of kids and that the co-workers are so friendly and helpful. But some of my expectations was different too for example when the kids make a mess in the library, and after they finish I have to put everything in the right place, thats the hard part of my internship, but I can handle that and more so I'm very happy and satisfied with this internship.
  • What is similar and/or different about the culture of your internship workplace environment compared to IHSL's school environment?
My internship site is very different from my school site. Here the kids play a lot and sometimes they have funny ways to do their homework, they enjoy to be here at the library having fun and at the same time doing something productively. And IHSL place is so boring sometimes because we cant make noise or have fun because we have to do our work and everything. But I enjoy in both places.
  • What new skills have you learned that you can apply at other jobs?
I think now I have new skills more than before, because everyday I interact with new people of different age and I help them. like I improve my communication skills and social skills.
  • What kind of relationship do you have with your mentor and co-workers?
I have a really good relationship with my mentor and co- workers because we support each other and they understand me everyday, even when I dont feel good, they give make me take the day off.
  • How have you grown as a result of interacting with professional adults?
I became more mature an now I learned a lot from professionals and now I have new connections that can help me in the future.
  • What kinds of communication skills have you gained?  Specifically, how has your English improved since beginning internship?
I improved my english because everyday I had to talk to a lot of kids and adults, and I'm not shy no more.
  • What other kinds of skills/abilities have you gained so far?
Each day at internship I'm required to shelve books and interact with kids. As a result, I've gotten much better helping and interacting with kids and being able to know the books places. I've also improved my hand writing abilities and typing speed because I have to make flyers for the library and the programs that we make for kids.
  • What challenges have you had to overcome?
Sometimes I had problems with the kids because they made a mess everyday, and I'm the one who has to fix that.
  • How has the altered internship schedule affected you?  How have you reorganized your time to make sure you are getting all your classwork done? If you're not getting your assignments done, what can you do for the remaining five weeks to ensure you earn better grades?
The schedule didn't affect me because I'm an organize person and I complete all my work class.
  • You have FIVE WEEKS of internship left. What are two goals do you hope to accomplish during the remaining weeks? These goals could include knowledge you hope to gain or skills you hope to learn.
I hope to finish and complete my 200 hours by june 28 in order to get pay.

  • IN ADDITION TO YOUR TEN RESPONSES: Post a image that best represents your internship and write a caption explaining why you chose the . For example, if I worked at a hospital, I could use this image and I could write this caption.

dekalb11.jpg (335×252)
I chose this picture, because the library looks like this everyday. The computer site is full always and the kids stay in the computer for a long time and they prefer stay there, than play board games.
